Since the arrival of Microsoft’s Bing search engine they have steadily prized a small piece of Google’s market share. I personally still use Google for the vast majority of my search needs but am currently working on my dissertation looking into the effects of white hat and black hat seo techniques – uk severe weather.
This has lead me to use three of the top search engines in Google, Yahoo and Bing. Although Yahoo and Bing have announced their merger to try and take on the giant Google at the time on this writing Yahoo and Bing are still separate entities.
Using Bing however lead me to think how similar the new Bing’s SERP pages look and feel exactly the same as the traditional Google SERP pages most of us are used too. Surely Google have an issue with this blatant copying but is the fact that we are all used to that colour scheme and layout the reason for this?
Looking into the matter more however leads me to find that Google, Yahoo and Bing use each other’s ideas all the time. Like for example when Bing first came along they had their large image on the main search page which then lead Google to copy this exact idea.
This “copycat” way of working of course isn’t confined to just this industry, all companies see their competitors do something which leads them to do the same. For example the car industry is a prime example, if BMW release a car with 500bhp Mercedes will release one which 510bhp shortly after in an effort to remain competitive in what is a tough market.
In conclusion I don’t think that Bing is the only guilty party, it seems that all the major search engines look at the competition for ideas, perhaps when copying there’s a hint of “ooh that’s a good idea, get to it”. Then again there might be a simple explanation as to why they are similar.
OK I thought it might be time to create a new free template as it has been well over a year since my last one.
I also thought it might be time to take a good look at HTML5 that everyone has been raving about so here is my first attempt at a template using HTML5 – basicHTML5:
As this is my first proper look into HTML5 I am sure that there might be a few issues or problems with it and make no guarantees that it is 100% correct in all particulars. However it has been checked against the W3C HTML5 validator and checks out OK.
I spend a lot of time crawling the Internet for information and come across many useful websites that I feel will benifit other webmasters.
This certainly isnt the final list, I will be adding to this list as and when I need to so please check back for updated links.
If you have any useful links you feel should be on this list please post a comment at the bottom and I’ll look at adding it.

I’ve recently been looking at the new PhotoShop CS5 features and the one that stands out for me is the new “Content-Aware Fill”.
It seems that Adobe have some strange mystical people working for them if they can create tools that can do this.
In a nutshell this new tool allows us to erase areas of images, which PhotoShop then automatically fills with the new background crafted from the rest of the image using some very clever new algorithms created by the clever people at Adobe.
From a designers point of view this will save a lot of time. I don’t think I need to say more, just check out the video below but be aware that it might shock you!
I’m really looking forward to the new release and trying out the new features =)
